Vernier, Digital and Dial Caliper Calibration

Vernier Caliper Calibration

Put simply, a caliper is a device designed to measure the distance between two sides of an object. In industrial applications, calipers are often used to verify products are being manufactured within specified dimensional criteria.

Today, you can commonly find three types of slide calipers in industrial applications and quality labs: Vernier calipers, dial calipers, and electronic calipers.  The type of caliper is defined by how a user will see their measurements displayed – i.e. analog via the slide rule or dial caliper, or digitally via the electronic caliper.

If you need reliable dimensional measurement data and accurate certifications, please reach out to Precision Solutions; we would be happy to send a knowledgeable metrological technician with certified, traceable measurement standards to your location to execute your dimensional calibrations.

What does a Caliper Calibration involve?

Our caliper calibrations include inside, outside and depth measurements as applicable.  In our procedures, technicians will use certified ceramic or stainless-steel gage block standards to execute test points across the caliper’s full range.

To achieve all necessary testing points for a dimensional calibration, the technician may use multiple gage block standards to measure a single test point using a technique called wringing.  In the wringing process, the gage blocks are bonded together via molecular attraction and surface tension effectively to create one standard for a single test point.
